There is no plate behind the letters. The Hebrew of the Shema Israel is cut all the way through this 23 × 23mm disc of solid 14K gold, so the words themselves hold the pendant together and daylight passes between them. Worn against skin or a shirt, the contrast makes the text easy to pick out.
It is a deceptively hard thing to cut. Each letter has to touch its neighbour or the rim to stay attached, which is what gives the design its woven, almost architectural look rather than the flat stamped appearance of a printed disc.
Made in solid 14K gold, yellow for warmth, white for a cooler, more contemporary finish, and hand-polished in Israel. The pendant is priced alone; add a matching solid gold chain below if you want the complete piece in 14K.
