Look closely and the map is made of words. The Hebrew of the Shema Israel is cut straight through this solid 14K gold pendant, the letters interlocking to fill the outline of the country. There is no engraving and no backing plate, the negative space between the letters is what you see through.
It is a difficult piece to make well. The letterforms have to connect to each other and to the border to hold together as one piece of metal, which is why the design reads as dense rather than delicate. At 42 × 16mm it sits comfortably at the collarbone.
